“A member of Magnum since 1972, Leonard Freed has spent years traveling the world and documenting everyday lives. “For me,” says Freed, “there are two important elements in photography: Time and Truth. Time is sealed as it were. Photos cannot be repeated. They are set forever in a moment in time. Truth is what we are seeking in art. My photos convey what I believe is my truth, expressed through my ability as an artist. You are seeing exactly what I saw.”
Un viaggiatore di frontiera
Quando incontrai Leonard Freed mi disse che sarebbe tornato a trovarmi in Italia.
Poco tempo dopo morì.
Voglio ringraziarlo perché si è lasciato guardare negli occhi.
Non succede spesso.
Tante volte le persone intelligenti sono anche arroganti, vivono la loro intelligenza e la loro sensibilità come un potere oscuro, sono torturati dal giudizio e privi di speranza, questo è insopportabile anche se, infondo, penso sia solo un riflesso della grande solitudine alla quale sono costretti da esperienze uniche ed indicibili.
Freed invece era un uomo umile.
Per tutta la vita ha cercato dal come arrivare al perché. Dal come si muore arrivare al perché si muore.
