New York City rappresenta in modo molto complesso gli U.S.A. : da un lato non ha nulla della provincia americana, della celeberrima middle-class che è il cuore pulsante degli Stati Uniti, dall’altro però ne costituisce la fotografia quando si pensa all’integrazione delle diverse etnie e culture che in questa città ha trovato la forma più evoluta e completa.
Le persone, People, sono l’immagine stessa della Grande Mela, più dei suoi grattacieli. E’ la risultante delle forze culturali portate dagli individui, ognuno con la sua storia e tradizione, che anche nel corso delle generazioni successive alle diverse ondate di immigrazione ha reso New York uno straordinario specchio della società occidentale.
Attraverso lo sguardo non superficiale su questo popolo si legge la storia passata ma anche quella presente, non sempre serena, di una paese ma forse di un’intera cultura, che affronta a fatica il presente non avendo però la fiducia nel futuro che da sempre è stato il motore che l’ha spinta in avanti.
ENGLISH VERSION
New York City represents the USA in complex ways. On the one hand, it has nothing of the American province, of that most famous middle class that is the beating heart of the United States. On the other, however, it is its image, if we think of the integration of the various ethnic and cultural groups that, in this city, has reached its most developed and accomplished form.
People are the image itself of the Big Apple, more than its skyscrapers. The city is the result of the cultural drives brought forward by individuals, each with their history and tradition which, even in the generations following the various waves of immigration, made New York an extraordinary reflection of Western society.
Through a non-superficial look at this people one reads the past, but also the present, sometimes troubled history of a country and perhaps of a whole culture, which deals with difficulty with the present, having lost the faith in the future that has always been its driving force.

Benjamin Barker - Johnny Depp - is Sweeney Todd, a grieved genius who reaches the peaks of creativity and pain, always in touch with his wounded soul. Todd’s character has a disenchanted gaze on the world, the look of a man who, at one time, expected it all and today cannot live with the nothing he’s got.
Sweeney Todd is a restless man hungry for revenge. In a leaden landscape that tells the inferno of the living in all its tragic nature, ambiguous, violent and sad figures move.
In a world where the strong ruthlessly crush the weak and the weak succumb with no dignity, Todd and Nellie make their fortune on the metaphor of life where each being devours the other with no morals or honour, with no pity or respect, even towards innocence. In this motion picture by Tim Burton the themes of Shakespearean tragedy become the driving force of a gruesome tale that presents a pessimistic view of life and of human relationships, and also tells about how hatred and the desire for revenge can become, for men, a kind of autoimmune disease, up to devouring them and letting them lose the very reasons of their existence

Benjamin Barker - Jonny Depp - è Sweeney Todd, un genio dolente che tocca le vette della creatività e della sofferenza, sempre a contatto con la propria anima ferita. Todd è un personaggio dallo sguardo disincantato rivolto verso il mondo, lo sguardo di chi è un tempo si aspettava tutto e che oggi non può vivere di questo niente.
Sweeney Todd è un uomo senza pace assetato di vendetta. In un paesaggio livido che racconta l’inferno dei vivi in tutta la sua tragicità si muovono figure ambigue, violente, tristi.
In un mondo in cui il forte schiaccia senza pietà il debole e il debole soccombe senza nessuna dignità, Todd e Nellie fanno della metafora della vita nella quale ogni essere divora l’altro senza morale né onore, senza alcuna pietà e rispetto neppure verso l’innocenza, la loro fortuna. In questo film di Tim Burton i temi della tragedia shakespeariana diventano il motore di una favola macabra che propone una visione pessimistica della vita e dei rapporti tra gli uomini e racconta anche di come l’odio e il desiderio di vendetta possano diventare per l’uomo una sorta di malattia autoimmune fino a divorarlo e fargli perdere le ragioni stesse della propria esistenza:
